Locator Transmitters

Our locator transmitters are pipe locator transmitters for the Schonstedt Rex and u-Locate receivers, which are sold without one. The transmitter puts a signal on a buried metal pipe, cable or tracer wire, and the receiver follows it to show where the line runs and how deep it is.

Which transmitter fits your receiver

For the Rex receiver

The Schonstedt Rex Transmitter sends 512 Hz, 33 kHz or 82 kHz. On a direct connection it runs up to 5 watts at 512 Hz and 33 kHz, and 1 watt at 82 kHz. It warns you if the line carries voltage before it sends a signal, and its rechargeable pack typically charges in under 4 hours.

For u-Locate and u-Locate+ receivers

The Schonstedt u-Locate Transmitter sends 33 kHz or 82 kHz on a direct connection and 82 kHz by induction. The u-Locate receiver uses 82 kHz, and the u-Locate+ adds 33 kHz. It runs up to 40 hours on 4 D cells and keeps its leads, ground stake and magnet in a tray in the case.

Clip on, clamp around or induce the signal

Direct connection

Clip the lead onto the pipe, cable or tracer wire where it comes above ground, at a meter, riser, hydrant or switch box, and push the ground stake in off to the side. It gives the strongest signal, so use it whenever you can reach the line.

Signal clamp

Close a clamp around a pipe or cable when you can't clip onto bare metal. The clamp is an optional extra for both transmitters and is sold separately.

Induction

With no access point, set the transmitter on the ground over the line, lined up the way its label shows, and it induces the signal through the soil. The signal is weaker than a direct connection, and Schonstedt says to work at least 33 ft from the u-Locate transmitter in this mode.

What a receiver does without a transmitter

On their own, the Rex and u-Locate receivers pick up live power cables, and the Rex and u-Locate+ also track a sonde pushed through a plastic pipe. To trace a metal pipe, a dead cable or a tracer wire, you need the transmitter.
