Finds lost or unknown pipe and cable, plus valves, tees and paved-over manholes.
$908Gas Line Locators
Our gas line locators are utility locators for gas lines, made to trace steel mains and the tracer wire on plastic services. Clip on at a meter, riser or valve, follow the signal, and read the depth where you plan to dig.
Made for water and gas lines. Its signal crosses insulators and rubber gaskets.
$3,667Traces water, sewer and gas pipes and electric and telecom cables on three frequencies, with a depth readout.
Receiver $1,816Walk-over receiver with left/right guidance tones, depth and current readouts, and data logging.
$4,770Traces buried pipe and cable with depth and current readouts, and finds sondes.
$5,500How gas line locators find steel and plastic lines
Steel mains and services
The Fisher TW-6 picks up a steel line with no hookup, even when you don't know where it starts. When you can reach the pipe, clip the Vivax-Metrotech VM-810 on at the meter or riser and set the ground stake. It's made for gas and water lines, and its signal crosses the insulators common on gas systems.
Plastic gas services
A plastic gas line carries no signal of its own, so you trace its tracer wire. Connect the transmitter to the wire where you can reach it and follow it like a metal line. The Schonstedt Rex and the vLoc3-9800 show depth as you go, and the vLoc3-9800 steers you with left and right tones.
Locating the pipe, not the gas
A gas line locator finds the pipe: where it runs and how deep it is. It doesn't sense gas, so it won't find a leak.
Staying on the right line
On a crowded street, gas, water and cable run close together. The VM-810 and vLoc3-9800 show signal current next to depth, and a sudden change tells you you've passed a tee or moved onto another line. Start on low power to keep the signal off neighboring lines.

Questions
Can a utility locator find a gas line?
Yes, if the line is steel or has a tracer wire. Put a signal on the pipe or the wire with the transmitter, then follow it with the receiver and mark it as you go.
Can you locate a plastic gas line?
Yes, by its tracer wire. Plastic pipe carries no signal, so connect to the tracer wire and trace that. Without a tracer wire, the locator has nothing to follow.
How much does a gas line locator cost?
Our gas line locators start at $908 for the Fisher TW-6 and run to $5,500 for the Vivax-Metrotech vLoc3-Pro. The Schonstedt Rex receiver is $1,816, with the transmitter sold separately.
