How a split box locator works
Finding a line when you don't know where it starts
With both boxes on the handle, walk across the spot where the line should be and mark where the signal peaks. Do it again every 15 to 20 feet and the marks show you the line. On a wide street, two people can sweep across it at least 30 feet apart.
Pinpointing and depth
Cross the line from both sides to find its center. For depth, tilt the receiver to 45 degrees with its bubble level and back away until the signal drops. That distance, minus 5 inches, is the depth.
What the TW-6 finds
- Lost or unknown lines buried metal pipe and cable, even when you don't know where they run.
- Fittings and covers valves, tees and risers off a main, and paved-over manhole covers.
- Lines you can reach clip on to a pipe or a dead cable, or use the coupling clamp when you can't get to bare metal.
- Plastic pipe run a fish tape or plumber's snake down it and trace that. The signal stops where a blockage is.

TW-6 probe, parts and repair
The TW-6 tracer probe is shorter than the older TW-5 probe and gives more accurate depth readings. A TW-5 probe still works, with less range. When your TW-6 needs work, Joe Malone tests it and replaces worn parts like switches, latches and covers.
