How to find a valve box with the M-66
Tune it and balance out the ground
Away from any metal, turn the Ground knob to 5 to switch it on, then turn Tuning until you hear a faint hum and the needle sits near 10. Lift the coil about a foot. If the tone changes, adjust Ground until it stays the same.
Sweep and outline the target
Swing the coil slowly from side to side at a steady height, overlapping each pass. The tone and the needle climb over metal. A big or shallow target can read larger than it is, so raise the coil or back Tuning off a quarter turn and sweep again to find its edges.

Weak batteries cost the M-66 depth and accuracy, so press Battery Test first: 80 to 100 on the meter is good. When it needs real work, Joe Malone tests it, checks the controls and replaces worn parts like coils, switches and covers.

Is the M-66 a metal detector or a magnetic locator?
It's a metal detector. It responds to all metals, while a magnetic locator like the Schonstedt GA-52Cx finds only iron and steel.
Can the M-66 trace a pipe or cable?
No. It finds metal objects, and Fisher says not to use it in place of a line tracer. To follow a line, pair it with a pipe and cable locator like the Fisher TW-6.
